worldbuilding

Background

So, I've been building a world (along with writing short passages about that world) since about mid-2019. Names and finer details are likely to change, not everything is fixed in place yet. I just realised this was all just living in my head, so now I am putting it out into the wil! So, this is what I have concocted of the world of Sydonia so far :)

Sydonia

Okay, forgive the terrible MS Paint map, but I havent yet found the drive to actually get a proper map drawn up (and boy oh boy am I bad at geography).

Sydonia is a collection of three islands: Lyra (left), Errai (right), and Caph (bottom).

These islands are based upon the articulation of the stars and a... very odd religious system, to be honest. Even I don't fully understand what I've done with it, but I think that makes it more intriguing to me. Anyway, it's all a bit weird, feel free to talk to me about it if you're interested!

Island of Lyra

An overwhelmingly warm island due to the protection from the wind that the Meissa Mountains provides.

Natural Landforms

  • Meissa Mountains - A large, rocky mountain range covered in dwarven settlements and rich veins of minerals/stones. The higher up the mountain you ascend, the colder and foggier it gets. The largest of the mountains (Mount Feyhorn) houses the main Dwarven city, Crystalhaven, ruled by a strong Dwarven king.

  • Bay of Cygnus - A peaceful, somewhat secluded bay surrounded by a handful of small towns and villages taking advantage of the calm waters and warm black sands of the beaches.

  • Sadr Cliffs - A steep, jagged cliff-face where another peak may have once stood, but is now merely rubble settled on the ocean floor, visible when the waters are calmest and clearest. The Orc settlement of Janness is situated at the furthest point of the cliffs.

  • Seirios Peaks – Named after the star the ‘big three’ were birthed from. To the south is Ansiau, to the west is Bostiae, and to the north is Khysna.

Major Cities

  • Glassiron - A small Dwarven city; mostly exists for mining, trading, and smithery. Near the Bay of Cygnus for trade routes to elsewhere, and to trade to the fishing communities around the bay.

  • Crystalhaven - Larger Dwarven city within the Meissa Mountains. Acts as the route through the mountains, and from the highest point within the city you can see almost the whole of Lyra. Seen as a tactical haven, it once belonged to the Orcs, however the Dwarves displaced the Orcs in an effort to possess the haven and monopolise trade routes throughout the isle.

  • Janness - A scattered collision of tents and hastily-constructed wooden structures. Many taverns, blacksmiths, tanners, and stables exist within this city, as well as several temples to various gods. The largest of which is a giant arena in which the Orcs stage battles to the Goddess Lianus.

Island of Errai

A temperate climate, leaning on the colder side. Wet and marshy, desolate of crops. Some Roman-esque towns and cities exist on the Island, remnants from the time where crops were fruitful on this island.

Natural Landforms

  • Laniakea (The Curiosities) – A series of strange floating islands surrounding Errai. Each has its own bubble of climate, ranging from thickly snow-covered to humid tropical rainforest. It is not known where they come from, nor how they hold themselves up off the ground, but it is widely assumed it was the work of Ahanjsi.

  • River Serpens – A long, wide, winding river filled with fish and surrounded by other varied wildlife. Stretches from the North to the South of Errai.

  • Beid Swamp – Forested, wet area, sodden through with water from the river Serpens. It is said that small communities of necromancers from the surrounding communities gather here every few years. This is because it is thought to be the final resting place of Kore, and many wish to use powerful magic to resurrect her in order to gain back bountiful harvests on Errai. Others believe that this will throw off the balance of Errai, and that Khysna will smite those on the island.

  • Eridani Marshes – Flat, boggy area. Sparse clumps of moss and heather surround the small rivers and mounds of muddy ground.

Major Cities

  • Bluewyvern - A small, dark city. Mostly abandoned, some half-demons lurk in the shade of the archways and buildings, surviving however they can. Powerful magic conceals this ruined city from all except those who feel truly alone/desperate, earning itself the title of ‘City of Exiles’.

  • Snowshade - Well-hidden buildings blend in against the stark white glow of the snow. Characterised by sparse buildings. The people of Snowshade wear layered pelts and large warm clothes to protect themselves from the bitter cold. Elders of the community are founded through their strength and hunting ability.

  • Blackdell - A large upmarket city. Classical Roman style stone and brick buildings and pathways. There is also a bathhouse, markets, a basilica style temple to Aolae, and an open-style forum where magic and worship are encouraged. It is ruled through a Magocracy, where High Elves imbued with magic of the Gods make the most important governmental decisions.

  • Eribank - Architecture much like Cambridge/Oxford/Bath. University city with archives and libraries abound. Many come from all over the world to study here as it is one of the most prestigious and respected places of learning. Wide open spaces and plazas abound, with small cafes and taverns lining the sides of the mouth of The River Serpens which runs centrally through the city. A lot of gold goes into transporting flowers and vegetation from elsewhere – one of the most beautiful sights, it is often said, is seeing the flower boats of Caph cresting the water at sunrise as they voyage towards Eribank. Governed by a Mayor/Council system

Island of Caph

The island shaped somewhat like a dragon's skull, it is mostly sunny towards the center-west, and rainier to the east. Many farm towns and commerce cities exist on the island.

Natural Landforms

  • Geinah Hills – Grassy rolling hills with cute towns embedded within them. A simple area.

  • Izar Plains – A long stretch of land perfect for general farming. Covered in farming communities.

  • Forest of Okda – A vivid green forest believed to be blessed by Chrysaea. The further through the forest you get, the darker and more mysterious it appears to be. (Inspired by the Hoh Rainforest)

  • Leonis Desert – In a bizzare contradiction to the forest directly next to it, baking sun and raging winds beat down upon this barren desert. It is widely ‘known’ to have no life in it, although a small town of exiles is situated at the tip of the desert. This land was once rich and thriving, but the aftermath of war caused the land to become abandoned and harsh.

Major Cities

  • Whiteholt - Multi-levelled hilly city, sporadically covered in brightly coloured painted stone buildings. Lots of merchants and makers come here to visit the famous docks/markets, as do the charlatans. A bustling and beautiful city. Look to Portmeiron in South Wales as an example.

  • Woodfair - A human settlement with more of a village feel to it than city. As being ruled by a theocracy, Woodfair is known as a place of religion and worship to the Goddess Khysna. Priests often come here to train. Most buildings here are made from humble materials, making the few churches and chapels within the city stand out even more, with white stone and marble reflecting the bright sun across the simple roofs of the villagers’ dwellings.

  • Wheatkeep - A farmer’s town/city. Surrounded by halfling settlements and farmlands, Wheatkeep has a bustling farmers market selling stunning and varied local produce. There are two churches in the town, the most popular one being in honour of Chrysaea, and the other being a mostly derelict church to Kore; some farmers from the surrounding areas travel to worship Kore in the hopes she may still be alive and will bless their crops.

  • Coldoak - A large elven city seated upon the treetops. The elven king rules from an enormous throne atop the highest tree, surveying the kingdom below him. While the city itself is beautiful, with winding greenery and twisted trunks highlighted in bright sunlight, the politics of the King and the quality of life of his people is dire. The elves of Coldoak are not often permitted to leave the city, and are instead kept to perform menial tasks for the tyrannical King. Rumors within Coldoak tell of the possibility of a city beneath the city, where the rebels against the King fled to upon his taking of the throne.

The Pantheon, and The Origins of Sydonia

All comes from Lutiya, the stellar nursery. It is unknown what existed before Lutiya - just that she spun up four stars, one after the other:

  1. Seirios, the brightest star in the sky, from which the first three Gods were created.

  2. Pleiades - glowing softly in the void - formed 3 individual sub-stars, which in turn created nine Gods (not each!!! I havent made that big a pantheon lol)

  3. Velorum, burning hot against darkness, spawned 7 Gods

  4. Diwetha, the star by which the physical world was birthed.

Ansiau, God of Death

Meet the God

  • Born of Seirios

  • He appears as darkness in a dream. If one is to imagine Ansiau, then one is to imagine the feeling of being utterly unable to move in fear, the feeling of attempting to run away from a dream, the knowledge that there is an impending end. There is no form to Ansuia, but the closest thing people often get to is a goat, which I think is rather an overstatement on the wider effect which goats have. Not really nightmare fuel, are they?

  • During the war of the Dragonborn, Ansiau chose to wipe out the warring factions to prevent them from being locked in eternal war by Lianus.

  • Was unioned to Kore, until Kore was banished by Khysna for basically cheating with Khysna's partner Aolae. Ansiau felt this punishment was unjust, unfair, and prejudiced. Unfortunately all they could do was watch Kore roam the lands beneath them in endless torment, so to save their partner from the pain of exile, Ansiau decided to mercifully kill Kore. It is rumoured in some towns that - after this event - Ansiau mostly abandoned humanity, leaving there to be no more safe passage between life and death.

Your Typical Church

Churches to Ansiau can scarcely be found intact after the events of the Draconic War, worshippers fleeing in fear of violence and rebuke. Towering grey ruins carved from rough-hewn stone frame a central altar - only partially discernable now. A glint of something atop the altar catches your eye, as the reflection of sunlight on water. Approaching the altar you realise the deep ochre of the strange liquid coating its surface, the sweet smell of grapes lingering in the air. Closer, closer now, and distinct metallic pangs mingle with the scent of rich red wine, twisting your stomach enough to make you gag. From behind a nearby pillar you hear a slight rustle, and you realise that whatever was left staining the central stone slab must be fresh.

Khysna, God of Life

Meet the God

  • Born of Seirios

  • A mother figure to all, with both arms and golden webbed wings outstretched from her shoulders. They appear to be jointly offering warmth and sanctuary without bias.

  • Unable to create new stars, as is unioned to (the now-castrated) Aolae.

  • Upon learning of their partner’s infertility and infidelity, Khysna blamed Kore for tempting her partner away (and making her feel as the inferior God), so she appealed to Adrestia/Invidia to banish Kore to wander amongst mortals forever. This tore a rift between the twins, with Khysna taking over as a stronger force within the pantheon, and Ansiau extricating himself from all.

Your Typical Church

Expansive, pristine, marble surfaces gleam, dipped in technicolour reflections from the stained-glass windows to the east and west of the church. The light shining through them both appears so unnaturally vibrant and pure that it seems as though you are viewing both the sunset and the sunrise occuring in perfect harmony. The grey veins running through the marble of the walls pulse to the beat of the preachers’ songs, echoing glorious sentiments in an unmistakably celestial voice. They stand, arms stretched outwards, atop a towering pedestal so high it is almost a wonder in itself as to how they got up there in the first place. Ample rows of benches are filled to the brim with families swaying to the rhythm of the room. You realise that, with all the time you have spent marvelling at the room from the entranceway, you have been singing along to hymns you have never heard before.

Bostiae, God of Knowledge

Meet the God

  • Born of Seirios

  • A regal white elephant with an eye hanging around his neck from a humble twine rope.

  • Attempts to be truly neutral. Does not interfere with humanity, only observes.

Your Typical Church

Under the grand wooden front doors spills out a peculiar, reverential silence. Through these, the arching dome of the intricately painted ceiling appears adorned in constellations. Standing central in the expansive chapel is an unnaturally pure marble statue of Bostiae - it appears almost as if the stone-carved eye draped around his neck follows you as you pick your way across the hundreds of books littering the floor. As you delve deeper within the book hoard you can spot familiar hunched figures of Tolvans, thin pale faces buried deep within books. Even if your feet were permitted to produce a noise in this church, it is unlikely that these worshippers would find themselves in any way disturbed.

Kore, Ex-God of the Harvest

Meet the God

  • Born of Pleiades

  • Was Goddess of Harvest and Ansiau’s wife, however was struck down by Khysna and banished from the realm of the Gods. Kore fled to the mortal world and there she died. It is said that she passed away somewhere on Errai, leaving it barren of crops.

Your Typical Church

In areas where - oft out of pure desperation - Kore is still worshipped, there is a time-honoured tradition where, coming to the end of every harvest season, the devoted shall rest their most fruitful crops and richest foods outside their doors. If by the end of the next harvest season their crops have not become rotten, then it means that Kore has risen again and blessed their harvest. Blind faith and hope bestowed unto a pile of vegetables.

Aolae, God of Light

Meet the God

  • Born of Velorum

  • Unioned to Khysna, creating the brightest sun in their joining.

  • Castrated by Adrestia/Invidia when found cheating with Kore.

Your Typical Church

Peering through the square glass walls of the church of light shows radiating circles of wooden pews emanating from a central bronze sundial. Crossing the threshold, the difference in energy between this church and a Khysnan church is palpable - this is a place for quiet reflection, for watching the passing of the sun across the sky. A sense of tranquil openness envelops and overwhelms you - in this silent, sacred place, one can deeply feel the loss that lies within the glittering sunspots dancing in the air. Bronze models of Aolae stand watch solemnly from the corners of the glass temple, the only item that could obscure the curious gaze of the villagers outside.

Adrestia and Invidia, Twin Gods of Justice and Tempest

Meet the God

  • Born of Velorum

  • Most often portrayed as a two-headed snake.

Your Typical Church

Your footsteps echo hollow against the slate floor, the sound rising no higher, silence hanging from the barren ceiling. You find yourself acutely aware of the small amount of history you know of Adrestia and Invidia, reminded that this is not a place of worship but a place of judgement. The pallid mound of flesh below the central fount appears to not stir - a miserable begging figure, focused so closely upon its own retribution that it shall never be allowed it. The twin gods do not often misplace their judgements; This shadow of a man will have once had sin for which he was beguiled to plead here for all of eternity.

Nyphthos, God of the Night Sky

Meet the God

  • Born of Velorum

  • Seen as a protector of the Gods and the pantheon. She holds the night sky upon her wings, feathers tarred with void.

Your Typical Church

It takes a moment for your eyes to adjust as you cross through the threshold; From the beating sunlight outside into the church bathed in true darkness, you begin to make out what appears to be soft, velvet curtains draping across every surface. This is clearly a place for quiet self-reflection, the absolute silence enhancing the sensory deprivation of the sensation of a complete lack of sight. As night falls the congregation are welcomed into a glass annex behind the altar to witness the passing from evening into night. It is this time when followers of Nyphthos believe that she smiles down upon them, and shelters them under the spread of her wings.

Adruvos, God of Fire

Meet the God

  • Born of Velorum

Your Typical Church

Nomadic worshippers of Adruvos will travel from place-to-place, following the ‘word of their God’ as it is written in the ashes. Natural caves act as host for these travellers, using the small size of the caves as an efficient way to bathe themselves in the radiance of fire. One can always tell a church of Adruvos, both past and present, from the wax seals emblazoned with intricate feathered patterns adorning the walls, from the lingering warmth in the air, and the acrid trails of smoke struck across the ceilings like the scattering of tea leaves. It is said that elders can trace the future in these smoke trails, and will direct the travel of their camps accordingly.

Chrysaea, God of Nature

Meet the God

  • Born of Pleiades

Your Typical Church

A mysterious, perfectly circular grove nestled under a canopy of trees deep within Okda forest stands as the highest place of worship to Chrysaea. Speckled sunlight dances off a shallow central pool and onto the six stone obelisks surrounding it. The pool stays unnaturally still, even despite the skirting movement of insects across the surface and the lapping of animals at the water's’ edge. This mythical place of pure tranquility is rumoured to be undiscoverable by any but the most devout of Chrysaea worshippers - most churches of Chrysaea are poor imitations of this pristine image.

Lianus, God of War

Meet the God

  • Born of Velorum

Your Typical Church

A base arena, rough-hewn banners strung on the remnants of warriors from days of old whip in the desert wind. Sand brewed with blood rests calm before the next battalion of worshippers displaces it. The air is rich and heavy with the smell of fresh bloodshed and the discordance of sword against sword. A low rumble of war echoes from the encampments beyond , and you are sure that this pantheon shall not stay silent for much longer.

Freihen, God of Prosperity and Wealth

Meet the God

  • Born of Velorum

Your Typical Church

A large dark stone church from the outside. Inside is coated all in silvers and bronzes, obviously polished and shining. At the end of the church, hanging from the ceiling, is a giant boars head, savagely disembodied and pierced atop a golden hook. It has visibly been gutted of perishable insides however matted blood coats the base of the neck. The tusks have been viciously replaced with crudely carved gold replicas, and the eyes have been replaced with shining rubies. A large bronze altar is covered with golden goblets of rich wines and bowls filled raw meats, standing underneath the slowly swinging head.
